Volunteer With Us!
We always need volunteers. There are lots of reasons to help out at Tŷ-Nant, but the main reason is to make sure that our cats are happy, safe, clean, healthy and loved. Without volunteers, our furry friends would not have Tŷ-Nant to call their home. If you love cats and would like to volunteer, we need help all day everyday, so any time you can spare (even as little as an hour) to come and help us clean, feed and pamper would make a huge difference to our cats. Our voluntary role is below.
All volunteers must be over 17 to adhere to our Insurance requirements and must be able to get to the sanctuary.

We are holding an event for people to come and have a look at what the Sanctuary Assistant role involves before committing to it.
If you are serious about volunteering and have one morning a week free to help out.

Here is a regular day at the sanctuary, With Lana, dont worry we don't actually work that fast.

We also sometimes need volunteers for specific things:
We need help with vet runs when we have poorly cats that need to get to the vet between vet visits or to take back and forth for neutering.
We often need non-cat related things like building maintenance, upholstery cleaning and painting and decorating done as well, so if you can help us out with your mad skills in any of these areas, we'd love that and our cats will love you too.
These needs will be posted here as and when we have a requirement, so please keep an eye out if you'd like to help us out.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Volunteers working at the sanctuary
What kind of tasks will I be doing?
Volunteers help with hands-on cat care (cleaning, feeding, socialising), laundry, dishes, basic maintenance and other ad hoc housekeeping duties. Tasks vary depending on the day, the cats’ needs, and your comfort level.
Do I need experience with cats?
No. We welcome people with all levels of experience. You’ll receive guidance, support, and a gentle introduction to the tasks. A willingness to learn and ability to follow instructions is what matters most.
What time commitment do you need?
Most volunteers do one regular shift per week, usually around 2.5 - 3 hours. Consistency helps the cats feel safe and helps the team plan the day smoothly.
Can I volunteer ad‑hoc or only when I’m free?
We have no paid staff so rely on predictable cover, so regular shifts are essential. If you need flexibility due to health, work, or caring responsibilities, we’ll work with you to find a pattern that suits you.
Is there an age limit?
Volunteers must be 17 or older. This is for safeguarding, insurance, and the safety of both volunteers and cats.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, plus sturdy closed‑toe shoes. No scarves, dangling jewellery, or anything cats could catch their claws in.
Will I be working directly with the cats?
Yes - but always in a calm, controlled way. Some cats love attention; others need space. You’ll be shown how to read their body language and interact safely.
Can I bring my children or partner with me?
Only registered volunteers can be on-site during shifts. This keeps the environment calm and predictable for the cats.
What if I’m allergic to cats?
Some volunteers with mild allergies manage fine with antihistamines and handwashing. If your allergies are moderate or severe, this environment may not be suitable.
What support will I get?
You’ll have a clear induction, written guidance, and a friendly team around you. No one is expected to know everything on day one.
What if I’m nervous or unsure?
That’s completely normal. Many volunteers start out feeling unsure and quickly settle in. You’ll never be thrown in at the deep end.
If you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask us.
